Hopeful Story, September 7, 2015

As summer draws to an end (and no matter how hard we ignore the signs, they are still there!), we start to think about autumn things again - things like going back to school, wearing sweaters or long pants, and setting a routine again. As we start to gear up for a new season of ministry at Hope Fellowship, you may be wondering if it’s time to get involved in a ministry or a small group at Hope Fellowship. While volunteering sometimes feels like it’s all about what we contribute, the truth is we gain more from it than we give. It always reminds me of when my daughters were small and “helped” me cook. They would add eggs to the bowl, and name each one as it went in. “There goes Daddy, Mommy…” Do you know how hard it is to eat eggs that have been named? And not just named, but given your name! I would fish out the egg shells and thank them for their help. Then I would clean the counter and the floor after they “helped” me mix whatever it was we were cooking. They thought they were helping but what they were really doing was learning. God is patient with us that way—we think we’re helping him but he’s really teaching us through it.
One of the ways we can learn is to listen to him. We’ll do that through our week of prayer and fasting. Each night from Sept. 14-18 we will get together for an hour to pray together. If you come, it doesn’t mean you have to spend an entire hour talking. Silence is good—we can’t hear God when we’re talking! You would be surprised how many times God will prompt you to be praying for something, out loud or silently, and your neighbour begins to pray for that very thing. Even if you don’t pray out loud, come and experience a time of prayer. At the end of our week of praying and fasting together, our zone coordinators and ministry leaders will give you an opportunity to learn what ministry roles need to be filled this year. You will have a chance to talk to them after our service on Sept. 20. Plan now to spend a bit of time after church to find out what’s happening this year.
I’m curious to find out where I will learn this year!
