Note from the Pastor, February 17, 2013

Steve Bell, a Winnipeg based singer-songwriter and recipient of two Junos and the 2012 Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal, has been booked to perform at Hope Fellowship later this year on Saturday, October 5. Since going solo in 1989, he has recorded seventeen albums and performed more than 1500 concerts in fifteen countries, including a number of concerts with various symphonies, such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Massey hall.
Steve’s guitar playing is exceptional, his tenor voice is rich and clear, and his songs are compositional jewels. He is also a masterful storyteller, engaging the audience with wonderful insights into life, intriguing thoughts about God, and a finely-tuned sense of humour. An evening with Steve Bell is always a delightful experience. I have heard him in concert many times, own all of his CDs and consider him to be one of my favourite musical artists. When my spirit needs lifting, I put on Steve Bell.
“For ten years, in the late 70s to late 80s, I was gigging full-time,” he explains on his website. “I’d play in country bands, dance bands, rock bands, whatever was needed to keep the bills paid. I didn't even really see myself as a career musician. I saw it as kind of a stop-gap thing until I figured out what to do with myself.” That all changed when the Roman Catholic chaplain who worked with his Dad at Stony Mountain Prison footed the bill to record and manufacture 200 cassette copies of Comfort My People, the Christian-themed album that took Steve beyond the bar circuit. From that humble beginning he has gone on to sell more than 300,000 albums.
What’s the story behind October’s highly anticipated concert?
When it was discovered that Terry’s wife, Lorraine, has cancer, Carl, Terry’s friend and bass player, asked if there was anything that we could do for the family. Terry, a terrific singer-songwriter in his own right, and Lorraine are huge fans of Steve Bell and suggested the idea of bringing him here for a concert.
Carl followed up with Steve’s manager and learned that, if we charge $15.00 per ticket, all sales after 200 tickets sold will go directly to Terry and Lorraine to financially support them as they deal with all of their additional medical costs.
Our auditorium can seat around 500. As host church, we are hoping for nothing less than a sold out performance. For that to happen, we need several things.
First, we need to surround Carl with a team consisting of people who are able and willing to look after the many details involved in planning and promoting this concert. If this is right up your alley, please contact the office asap (905-571-6004).
Secondly, we need the people of Hope Fellowship to come through and support this event with their presence. Steve Bell has a broad appeal, but it would be especially exciting if all of us would see this as a memorable highlight for our congregation in 2013. I invite you to embrace this concert as a faith-building and church-unifying event, a lovely gift from God to be shared with our families, neighbours and friends.
Finally, we need your prayers for the concert’s success and Lorraine’s recovery from cancer.
Steve Bell’s independent label, Signpost Music, exists “to encourage Christian faith and thoughtful living through artful word and song.” Join me on Saturday, October 5 for a Steve Bell concert right here in our own auditorium and discover for yourself just how “artful” Steve is.
