Change for Change
GEMS (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Saviour) is our club and life group for girls in grades 3-6. It’s something I’m so honoured to be a part of, especially when it has come to our Change for Change fundraiser.
We have been collecting pennies and other change - coins that we toss aside, keep in jars, and don’t think much of – to bring change to GEMS Africa – hope, joy, and a future. GEMS has been working in Zambia since 2006 and the Call to Zambia has become the mission focus for GEMS. By starting clubs, training counsellors, and building a school for orphaned and under resourced children – The Esther School – God is changing lives not only in Zambia, but also moving in the hearts of our GEMS girls and counsellors.
To kick off our fundraiser, one of our counsellors who had the opportunity to visit the Esther school, shared some stories and pictures. We also watched a video showing those volunteers and locals that were building the Esther school and some GEMS clubs in action. Our GEMS heard how thankful the counsellors were for all the support they’ve received from clubs like ours in North America. At the end of GEMS that night, two girls approached me telling of how they were going to give a presentation to their class at school to see if anyone wanted to join them in collecting change. A counsellor also had the idea of keeping a jar at her workplace to collect change there. These little acts, when joined together, can have life changing results, and we are extending the challenge to you!
Do you have any spare coins sitting around, collecting dust? It could bring big change to those at The Esther School. The money raised will go directly to the school for their current needs including bricks for a grade one classroom, chickens and a hen house, an orchard, and teacher salaries. Look for the ‘Change for Change’ jar at the information desk during the next two weeks and let’s together fill it to overflowing.
