Hopeful Story, June 3, 2012

Every child is a miracle, and the safe arrival of Lillian was a miracle as well, for it could have been a very different story. Labour began around midnight on May 3rd and was progressing normally, but by 6 am, a sudden tightness and pain were felt all over Melissa’s abdomen. This was no ordinary contraction as she could hardly stand or walk. As the pain continued, the midwife was called and the decision was made to go to the hospital. Monitors were used to make sure Lillian was doing well, but because the contractions were still far apart, there was no reason to be admitted this early on. The midwife was concerned about the soreness though, and asked the doctor on call for an assessment. Dr. Hameed said the pain could possibly be caused by a rupture of the uterus. Her advice was to have a C-section immediately and she cancelled that day’s scheduled surgeries to make sure the surgical team and operating room were available. Just before surgery it was clear what was causing the pain - a bulge could be seen from the outside where Lillian was lying in the womb. The uterus had indeed ruptured, and swift action was required. Once the doctor reached the uterus during the operation, no incision was needed, Lillian was right there and not only had the previous C-section scar torn completely open, but the tear continued up the right side. Dr. Hameed told us we were minutes away from a disastrous situation where the placenta could have torn as well. Dr. Hameed, with all her experience, made the claim that, “God saved your baby today.” A tear like this is rare and staff told us that even those who didn’t believe in God still agreed that this was a miraculous birth. There were many things that could have gone wrong like not being admitted early, having to wait for the doctor on call to arrive, or discovering that the operating room was occupied. Everything went right instead. Thank you Jesus!
