An Update from Christina Reid
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I ventured with a team into the most dangerous part of San Jose, Zona Roja; the Red Zone. This is the devil’s neighbourhood, where walking one block means witnessing multiple drug deals, women prostituting, homeless men searching the streets, people getting high.
Dirt and dust filled our lungs, garbage littered the streets, the beautiful and vibrant colours that once painted the buildings were now faded and crumbling. But there is a place where we ate and did fellowship, Casa Esperanza; House of Hope, a place where we welcomed women and trans-gendered prostitutes into a safe haven. There I helped serve a hot and steamy breakfast of frijoles, arroz, pan y cafe and talked with our friends about their troubles, dreams, and sorrows. It is also a house where clothes were be sold, skills training were offered, and the Word of God is living and breathing.

A New Beginning; A Salvation Story
Volcanic dust blew in the front door as we shuffled in to prepare for Bible study. We passed our usual friends on the street, faithfully in the same spots they call home. The aroma of coffee announced its arrival as it knocked on the door of our senses. Women filled the room as we welcomed them in; Buenas Dias, a kiss on the cheek.
I started speaking and sharing the Gospel, my foreign words translated for ears that could understand. And at the end, I prayed with a woman who accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour. We cried, we laughed, and her heart told me her story of sorrow, drugs, addiction, and homosexuality.   Welcome to our eternal familia beautiful amiga.
As soon as this was done, a fight broke out between her friend, a Trans, and a street man yelling harassment outside the gated door. Darkness had lost a battle, and it started throwing a fit. Policia, Policia, a handful of minutes later and it was contained. Women walk in, women walk out, every time You have a plan. Gracias Dios.
