Note from the Pastor, March 2, 2014

As the producer of Emmy award winning shows like Survivor, The Apprentice, The Voice and Shark Tank, Mark Burnett is well known for what he does. He creates reality TV series that draw record numbers of viewers who watch contestants audition and compete until all are eliminated but the winner. In 2009, Survivor was named the number one reality show of all time by Entertainment Weekly. Because of his successes, Burnett has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2013, TV Guide named him “Producer of the Year.”
Two projects that he co-produced allow the world to see not only what he does, but also who he is. He is a Christian who wants people to experience the Bible and know Jesus Christ with brand new appreciation. For that reason, in 2013, he produced The Bible for the History Channel, five two-hour documentaries based on stories from Genesis to Revelation that have been seen by one hundred million viewers. And now, in 2014, just in time for Lent, he has released his first major feature film, Son of God, a two hour and fifteen minute epic based on the life, death and resurrection of Christ, the first big movie about Jesus since Mel Gibson’s 2004 release The Passion.
Burnett’s co-producer on both The Bible and Son of God is his wife Roma Downey, who is best known for her role as the kind, strong angel Monica in the series Touched By An Angel. In Son of God she plays the role of Mary during the later years of Jesus’ life.
“This is so much more to us than a film,” Burnett told journalists at a preview of the film. “This is really, really important for our faith, our life.” The fact that this couple is willing to be identified so publicly with Jesus is a powerful witness. Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, both 54, have courageously decided to direct their finances, talents and influence towards the cause closest to their hearts … the Kingdom of God and its king, the Lord Jesus Christ. Clearly, they have taken seriously Christ’s challenge to acknowledge him before others.
At Saddleback Church, pastor Rick Warren is offering a six-week study curriculum for small groups, called "Son of God: The Life of Jesus in You." It began this weekend with the movie's release and will end on Easter.
Here at Hope Fellowship, I will preach a series of Lent sermons about the words that Jesus uttered on the cross. Titled “Famous Last Words”, this series will take a close look at the seven sentences that Jesus said while he was crucified. Like the last words said by loved ones on their deathbeds, these words are very meaningful to followers of Jesus. I can think of no better way to prepare our hearts for these messages about what Jesus said than by seeing Son of God as it tracks Christ’s life from his humble beginnings to his death and resurrection.
When you go, take the risk of bringing along an unbelieving or searching friend. Although I’ve only seen the trailer, everything that I have learned about this movie tells me that it will offer a fantastic opportunity to be introduced (or re-introduced) to the Lord.
For Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, making this film is a bigger risk than we might imagine. Hollywood is not that receptive to Bible-themed shows and movies. “But we were so certain of our faith that we didn't care if the rest of Hollywood did reject us and our careers were over,” Burnett said.
Son of God, the ultimate reality show, went into wide release on Friday, February 28 and is currently showing in local Cineplex theatres.
