Hopeful Story, July 28, 2013

On Monday night, the Sea to Sea cyclists’ sleep was interrupted every two hours by passing trains. On Tuesday morning, a powerful storm delayed the start of the day’s ride. On Wednesday, the tour reached the halfway point of the ride. This weekend they’re in Iowa, resting for Week 6 which will end in Grand Rapids, Michigan where a huge Sunday night rally will take place in Calvin College’s Van Noord Arena.
Corn and soy fields under big skies dominated the scenery last week. Like the Canadian prairies, the American Midwest has more hills than people in automobiles realize. On her blog, Alice mentioned many challenges: extreme heat, severe head winds, ominous clouds on the horizon, and the constant hazard of shredded truck tires that leave tiny bicycle tire-puncturing metal wires on the road.
Despite the dangers, the morale of the cycling community is excellent, according to Joan who called this week. Everyone was thrilled to see Shirley and Rudy return to the tour from their home in Michigan a week after Shirley had her broken leg set. Shirley is volunteering where she can; Rudy is cycling again. Then there was the additional excitement of welcoming Pastor Jake from Trenton back only one week after two stents were inserted to deal with two blocked arteries to the heart. Imagine cycling again so soon after heart surgery!
Reflecting on her Sea to Sea experience, Alice wrote, “This ride has made me more aware of the little things that we take for granted, like having a place to sleep, food to eat and clean water to drink.” She also wrote, “I miss Jef even more than I realized I would.” Her sentiment reminds us to keep both Jef and Andy in our prayers while their courageous wives complete this adventure of a lifetime.
