Hopeful Story, December 9, 2012

I remember the discussion like it was yesterday. In fact it was March 2009, and we were in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. We were wrestling with the question, “What will we do when we get back to Canada?” In every country we visited during our year-long journey around the world, we experienced incredible hospitality and we knew that once back home we would find ways to welcome people visiting/settling in Canada.
This morning you have the opportunity to meet one of those people whose generosity had a lasting effect on our family, Kohima. Kohima works with World Renew (formerly CRWRC) in Bangladesh and India, and she became a family hero when she brought us Doritos and M&Ms after a long week of eating only rice and curry at every meal! During our travels people like Kohima made space available in their home or lent us household items to furnish a rented apartment; they invited us to join their family celebrations; they helped us practice a new language, and sometimes they even surprised us with a special treat from back home. They were small gestures that meant a world of difference to us.
We learned that’s what hospitality is really all about – it doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated – it simply means making room for others. What a blessing to be able to share Hope Fellowship hospitality with Kohima this morning!
