Hopeful Story, November 18, 2012

On August 27th, 2011, Hurricane Irene struck Hyde County, North Carolina. Jason was home watching the storm as it took the shingles off his house. While assessing the resulting water damage, Jason discovered that termite infestation required the house to be completely torn down.
Distraught with the knowledge that he and his wife Connie could not afford to rebuild his house, Jason turned to his pastor for advice. Jason’s pastor told him to pray to God and tell God that he expected a blessing. Confused by this, Jason did as he was told. On Monday Jason thought about this strange request. He thought about how his family was spared any harm during the storm and how his parents’ house had been spared extensive damage. He realized that in itself was a blessing. It was later that day when he got around to visiting Tommy at the United Methodist Church Disaster Response Services just four miles from his house, that he received the blessing that he asked God for. After assessing Jason’s situation, Tommy told him that if Jason paid for the materials, volunteers would build his house for him.
Jason could not believe this blessing! Complete strangers would come and build his house! Every day we were at his house, we were visited by either Jason, Connie, his mom or his dad. All of them could not have been more grateful to us. At the end of the week, Jason’s mom led us in prayer, followed by a group hug. I could not help but feel that I too was blessed by this experience.
