Hopeful Story, March 25, 2012

Did you know that we have a Safe Church Volunteer Data Base? It is a list of the 110-120 persons who volunteer with our children and youth and it helps us make sure that every person’s police check is current. In fact, it is set up to visually flag anyone who is up for renewal in three months. These people are then notified by e-mail or phone; the database will flag their name again if their police check is late.
There is nothing confidential about this list. It records when the police check was done and who the references were. The actual police checks are seen only by the members of the Safe Church Team that consists of only one person right now, Rod Van Dyk, one of our Administration Elders and the person who inputted all the information. Rod would love to see a team put in place so that he can hand this task over. “Everything is set up,” he reassured me. In the meantime, he continues to work closely with Nicole and Alice, our Kids and Youth Zone Co-ordinators respectively, to make sure that both the list of volunteers and their police checks are current.
I learned from Rod that police checks cost only $15 if you show a reference letter from the congregation in which you will be volunteering. Evelyn, our Administrative Secretary, has this in place. All you have to do is ask her, and she will give you the letter. Without this letter, a police check costs $40, so it’s well worth the effort to come by the office.
There’s talk of another sign up day at Hope Fellowship when a police officer will come and handle all the requests for police checks. But the date is still to be determined.
Isn’t it good to know that Rod has installed this data base, ensuring that every volunteer who works with children and young people at Hope fellowship has an up to date police check? As one person told me, “I’m sure it is a comfort to every parent just knowing that this is in place.”
If you are interested in being a member of the Safe Church Team, please call the office (905-571-6004). We need you.
