Hopeful Story, March 18, 2012

We were well into the new VeggieTales Movie, Robin Good and His Not-So-Merry-Men, when one character said to another, “What’s the matter? Your face is as long as a boring sermon!” There was a burst of laughter around me and I felt many adult and young faces turn my way. Ah, the peculiar burden of being a preacher!

Between sixty to eighty parents, grandparents and kids showed up for our Wednesday movie matinee, and it’s fair to say that everyone enjoyed it at various levels. The film actually offered three different segments. The first episode was about a sad little asparagus that thought everyone had forgotten his birthday, until he learned that it was a leap year and it was only February 29, not March 1. This was followed by a silly song with Larry called “Bubble Rap” that reminded all of us how much fun it is to pop those bubble wrap bubbles. Finally we got to the main event, a comic and touching re-make of the Robin Hood story that saw good defeat evil with lots of “hammunition” and a spirit of generosity. Maybe we should show it the next time I preach about giving. Or maybe not.
At the end of the movie, our creative staff handed out freshly popped popcorn, drinks, and even VeggieTales colouring sheets, stickers, and balloons. Everybody went home happy, including one child whose free-spirited balloon was rescued from the ceiling and safely re-tied to her wrist.
This was the third of three fun events that we scheduled this year simply to reach out to the community and build up our own fellowship. Looking back at our fall spaghetti dinner, our winter skate at the arena, and now this March Break movie matinee, I’m grateful for all those who made these events happen and everyone who came out to participate.
Soon our staff will be reviewing the year and planning the next year, and I welcome you to let me know (pastor@hopefellowship.ca) whether these are the sorts of things we should continue to offer as we seek to be a multi-cultural church that honours God and blesses people by being both internally strong and externally focused.
By the way, Robin Good has been donated to our church library. Are you “vegetable” enough to check it out?
