Hopeful Story, October 23, 2016

Last week my husband, Chris, wrote about our trip to Haiti with Speroway. I have the opportunity to share more of the story of this particular trip.
God had already laid the country of Haiti on our hearts and so, when we were asked if we’d like to participate in this trip, we didn’t hesitate to say yes. We worked with new partners in a new country, which meant that we didn’t exactly know what to expect. Troubles started right away when some of our bags were held up in Montreal and then we had problems leaving the airport in Port-au-Prince. God proved himself faithful and both those issues were resolved, although we had to work without those bags for a few days. I am always amazed at how people, some of whom are complete strangers to each other, can band together to do what we do. This time we worked out of existing medical clinics, but still needed to do all the usual set up. There were challenges with generators not working, issues with crowd control, running out of certain medications far too early and, of course a hurricane that affected a number of our plans. There were many wonderful things that happened, too.
Hundreds of people were given medication and dental work, with an extra clinic day even. Our in-country partners were set up so follow-up of patients can happen. Local doctors and medical students were given training while we worked. We were able to love on those local team members who needed to see that we cared about them and their country. I even got up the courage to speak in Creole, explaining medication instructions to patients!
We don’t want to come home from these trips without being changed ourselves.
Thanksgiving held special meaning for me this year, being home with my family. We are so richly blessed and I never want that to become just a phrase we say. The question is what will we do with those blessings? Hold on to them tightly or allow God to use them?
