Hopeful Story, January 31, 2016

On Tuesday, Lilian sent this joyful e-mail to her co-deacons: “I received the counting slip for this past Sunday and we had the biggest ever collection in the history of Hope Fellowship. We collected $30,543.46 for refugee sponsorship. We had previously received $9,400 and have about another $4,000 in pledges for a total of approximately $43,943.46. How awesome is that! God is certainly blessing Hope with the sponsorship of two Syrian Refugee families.”
It took the counting committee an extra hour to count the collection, but they were too excited to notice the additional time.
For both the leadership and the Refugee Sponsorship Steering Committee, this collection was a tremendous vote of confidence. “$43 thousand plus. How cool is that!” exclaimed Brian, the Vision Leadership Board’s (VLB) chairperson. “What an affirmation from the people of Hope!” Fred, who chairs the steering committee, said, “I am so thankful for the generosity of our church and was excited to share the news with the committee.”
Sunday’s offering followed Saturday’s night presentation of the movie War Room, a powerful film about the power of prayer as an effective weapon in our fight for healthy marriages and families. This event was sponsored by the youth, parents and leaders who will be going to the Dominican Republic in July to build homes with the Samaritan Foundation. Concession stand sales and a free will offering raised $1900 that will be used to purchase materials like concrete blocks and mortar. This amount, in addition to Sunday’s big offering, equals a beautiful demonstration of compassion on a weekend that will be remembered for its bountiful giving.
Anyone planning to contribute or fill out a pledge card is encouraged to still help out as well. “It is important to remember that the 70k that we have budgeted has little in it for contingencies such as eye, dental and medical care that is not covered,” Fred observed. “We will also be very challenged to find rental accommodations at affordable prices.”
Sharon, VLB clerk, summed up this generous weekend best when she simply said, “God is good!”
