Hopeful Story, April 5, 2015

Will our new cross inspire and encourage drivers on Bloor Street, Courtice Road and even the Highway of Heroes? Scott Armstrong, the director of the Life Care Counseling Centre, answered that question in this e-mail: “I want to tell you how wonderful it is to see the cross on the tower! I can see it from the 401 when I come in from the East. It brings me such joy and comfort as a powerful visual reminder that Jesus is with us and watching over us! Awesome!”
A teenager asked how much it cost. His eyes bugged out when he was told, “Nothing. In fact, we’re getting paid to have it there.” The monthly rental amount will go directly to paying down our mortgage.
It’s such a God-thing. Many churches spend megabucks on a steeple, spire or crucifix. But our cross came by way of a communications company’s request to erect a cell phone tower on our property. That was about four years ago. At that time, they showed us various cross designs for church landlords. Then, for the longest time we heard nothing. We even thought that the deal was dead until they suddenly re-appeared and got to work in February. And here it is, a cross that was erected in Clarington during Lent, just in time for Good Friday and Easter.
Debra and Hailey parked alongside Marja and me as we sat in our car looking at the cross. “It makes me think of the hymn, ‘Lift High The Cross,’” Debra said. “That’s exactly the song I’ve been singing in my head,” I exclaimed, prompting Debra, Marja and me to spontaneously sing the opening lines
Four years ago we chose the simplest design, a cross that is as sparse and empty as the grave that Jesus inhabited for three days. A powerful symbol of Christ’s sacrificial love and victory over sin and death
Now it’s there for all the world to see, a cross that’s six meters (20 feet) tall on a tower that’s forty meters (130 feet) high. And if we ever have to evacuate the church, we can simply say, “Go to the cross,” because it’s right behind our Evacuation Area.

P.S. Several people have asked, “Will it be lit at night?” Rich told me that it will be illuminated by LED lights that will outline the shape of the cross.
