Hopeful Story, November 30, 2014

It started with an idea for a fundraiser for the Sea to Sea Bike Tour that Joan and Alice cycled in 2013. Women came together to “groove” and the money raised helped Joan and Alice. Some of the favourite moves were the yoga stretches at the end of the evening, which gave birth to another idea – why not hold some yoga classes?
So in 2013-14 Lilian and Deb got together and hosted several 8-week sessions of yoga classes. Deb, a certified instructor, led the sessions, and Lilian did the administrative work. Over the course of the year they were able to raise $1,000.00 for the Healthy Babies, Healthy Moms maternal health initiative by World Renew. What an awesome gift! This fall they decided to support Sheila Dykstra in her mission work.
Why yoga? It’s a chance in this busy life we live to slow down and stretch out our muscles, to become aware of our bodies and our breathing – a chance to step away from the busyness of life and be quiet for an hour. Deb leads the sessions with a quiet voice and spirit, encouraging people to not go beyond their abilities. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done any yoga stretches before – you work to your own abilities. At the end of each session Deb thanks each person who comes, tells them to thank themselves for taking the time to do something good for themselves and then reminds the group that all the money raised goes to help Sheila Dykstra raise the money she needs for her missionary work. As a missionary working with Christian Reformed World Missions, Sheila is asked to raise $98,361.00, half of which is salary. That’s a lot of work and time and energy, on top of the work she does as Education Consultant! Thanks to Deb and Lilian and all the people who came out to the first 8-week session of yoga (yes, people – both men and women are invited!), Sheila will have $1,000.00 less to worry about.
The yoga group will be meeting on Dec. 1, 8 & 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Cost is $10.00 per session and all the money goes directly to Sheila. Grab your yoga mat and come do some good for yourself and for Sheila at the same time. See you there?
