Hopeful Story, December 14, 2014

World Renew is an organization of the Christian Reformed Church that brings hope in so many different ways through each of its different arms. World Renew – Free-a-Family, gives hope to families living in poverty; World Renew – International, brings teaching aids to countries in need of farming skills, etc; World Renew – Canadian Food Grains Bank, brings food to countries facing drought. Then there is World Renew – Disaster Response Services (DRS), which brings hope to areas where natural disasters have occurred in Canada or the USA.
Presently World Renew-DRS has long term sites in High River, Alberta, from severe flooding in 2013 and in Ocean Country, New Jersey from Super Storm Sandy in 2012. A short term site has opened in Washington, NC, which was hit by a tornado last spring and a short term site will be opening in Pensacola, FL in January, also from flooding. As well DRS has many areas where they send teams of college or high school age students for one week assignments.
We just returned from a three week trip to Ocean County, New Jersey, along with Dave & Connie who joined us for a week. It again was such a blessing to us to see folks get that hopeful look back in their eyes…help has arrived and we will soon be back in our own home! Our team finished one home and almost completed 3 others. It’s hard work (putting in new windows, dry walling, mudding, painting, flooring, etc) but what a joy when people see that progress happening before their eyes.
Not all of World Renew-DRS work is away from home. Last year we saw the completion of a home in Bracebridge, Ontario after it was destroyed by the raging river. Even at this time we are working on a new build home in Tweed, Ontario. This home was damaged beyond repair from this year’s spring flood of the Moira River. Several people from within Classis Quinte have volunteered to see this project come to completion. The home owner should be able to move in before Christmas.
Praise God for so many people willing to help those caught in natural disasters.
