Hopeful Story, November 23, 2014

November 11 – Remembrance Day. This year more Canadians took the time to remember and participate than in many years. It was the first co-ed night for Cadets Hawks (boys in grades 7 & 8) and GEMS 2.0 (girls in grades 7 & 8).

Counsellors Kimberly, Amanda, Kathryn, Adrian and Steven knew they wanted to incorporate Remembrance Day into the evening's ministry. Red and white carnations were purchased and the students attached messages with ribbons saying "thank you for your service" or "you are loved". Then the flowers were brought to WhiteCliffe Retirement Home, where counsellors and students were able to meet with veterans and other seniors. The counsellors encouraged the youth to talk to the veterans and ask questions. One veteran, John, shared his journey during WWII, where his life went after the war and the struggles he faced.
We finished the evening back at the church to reflect on our evening. The youth were shocked to hear that John received an hourly rate of 16 cents at his first job after the war had ended and how much things have changed for them as youth today. John had the best advice for our youth. He said, “Be respectful, stay in school, and work hard”. Wise words for not only our youth, but every one of us to remember each and every day that we wake up in this great nation, with the freedom we get to enjoy because of the ultimate sacrifice these men and women gave. Lest we forget.
