Hopeful Story, December 6, 2015

Advent is a time where we ready ourselves to celebrate Jesus coming into the world as a helpless baby and at the same time, prepare for His return as Triumphant King. We tell the Story of Jesus and His love. While that never gets old, each year we try to tell the Story in ways that make the Word-Made-Flesh more of a reality and in the telling, we find ourselves in this epic saga of Love winning all.
When my children were little, a good story had good illustrations. I don't think we're so different now. Art work invites us to enter into the narrative. Pastor Peter's Advent series highlights the women who have been written into the Story and the Visual Arts team felt led to participate in the telling by putting together the installation you see on stage.
The Mother and Child banner at centre stage, accented with the traditional blue and purple colours of Advent, represents each woman who has borne a child in this holy family tree.
However, the banner is a somewhat generic representation. In an effort to put a face to these courageous women, it was decided that a portrait painted by one of our artists be featured each week, creating a kind of gallery. The Bible has been an inspiration to many great artists over the centuries and so we looked to these masters for guidance in the painting of the portraits chosen.
Last week we saw a portrait of Tamar, painted by Patricia. This week, we see a portrait of Rahab, painted by Alida. Megan will be painting Ruth, Allison is painting Bathsheba and I am attempting to paint Mary. With every brushstroke a prayer goes up that we might be faithful to the original painting, inviting us all into the story, drawing our eyes to the Author.
We are blessed with many talented artists at Hope and we are grateful for these gifted women so willing to share their ability. They have helped to make the Word-Made-Flesh more tangible. They illustrate beautifully, the Story of Jesus and His love.
