Hopeful Story, July 12, 2015

One hundred children each day. Forty volunteers wearing orange t-shirts who greeted them and interacted with them. A top notch curriculum that introduced the kids to God and Jesus. Five different stations where crews of ten children heard a Bible story, exercised their imaginations, experienced life at base camp, enjoyed an outdoor activity and tasted a Mountain Top treat. An awesome Sherpa Guide (Henrietta) and a terrific expedition leader named Trek (Cheryl) to lead them. Creative scientific experiments, videos and songs. It all added up to an amazing week as our first ever VBS turned this season into our best summer ever at Hope Fellowship Church.
The girls really liked it. The boys really liked it, too. Probably because Everest VBS offered so many activities. Take Wednesday, for example. That was the day when the Glacier Games station gave each crew of ten kids a frozen, rolled up t-shirt that they had to melt or whack apart into a wearable state. Those frozen balls of cotton material were thrown against the church walls, slammed against the sidewalks and lamppost bases, and treated to various additional indignities. With the help of hot water, each shirt was finally pried apart and wrung out, at which point every child got to wear this frigid article of clothing and run a short lap on the field. Would you believe that the kids were actually clamouring for their turn to put this cold, damp shirt on!
Hours of planning and organizing went into this year’s VBS program by an excellent team of three persons: Cheryl, Erin and Jess. Joan, their mentor and our Kids Zone Co-ordinator, deserves a shout out, too. We can’t thank God enough for their efforts and enthusiasm!
Every day began and ended with a Summit Celebration. Today, we want you to get a taste of what happened at VBS this week. By the end of our kid-friendly VBS Celebration service, we hope that you will join the kids and volunteers in “holding on” to the God who has the power to provide, comfort, heal, forgive and love.
